Aquatic Therapy

What is Aquatic Therapy?

Aquatic therapy is a therapeutic procedure which attempts to improve function through the application of aquatic therapeutic exercises.  Almost anything that can be performed on land can be performed in the water….and more!

OUR POOL! We boast a spacious outdoor salt water pool.  We chose salt to decrease exposure to harmful chemicals and irritants.  Our pool is also heated to a comfortable    90º F, to improve circulation and promote relaxation

Goals of Aquatic Therapy:

To improve:

  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Balance, reaction time, safety
  • Gait
  • ADLs
  • Exercise tolerance
  • Head and trunk control
  • Perceptual and spatial relations
  • Arousal
  • Oral/facial control
  • Cardiopulmonary fitness
  • Skill, coordination through sports

To Decrease:

  • Abnormal tone and synergistic patterns
  • Tactile defensiveness/hypersensitivity
  • Fatigue
  • Pain

Benefits of Aquatic Therapy are many.  Through the water, the therapist can apply weight-bearing and resistance in a controlled and progressive manner.  We are able to increase body awareness through exercise and functional tasks.  The water also allows for buoyancy to assist with movement.  Aquatic therapy can prevent and retard muscle wasting and contractures.  In the water, patients experience decreased muscle tone and spasticity
